ABSENT INTERIORS
“If one were to give an account of all the doors one has closed and opened, of all the doors one would like to re-open, one would have to tell the story of one’s entire life.” Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space
What happens when we find ourselves locked out? Which doors open to us and which ones don’t. The ones that don’t, will they do so again? Or are their interiors lost to us forever, because the lease is up, the relationship is over, the job is done, the friends have moved out, the arts space has been turned into a hotel?
Embodied memories of lost spaces near and far are danced against a backdrop of the here and now. Present and past collide in a moving meditation on themes of access and inaccessibility, as we try to find a way back in. On an accompanying audio track accessed on your own device, reflections on interior and exterior space from architects, urbanists and philosophers juxtapose with personal stories of inaccessible interiors and invitations to revisit your own.
